Prayer Request for Baby Rowan
October 31, 2007Some of you have asked about the latest about little Baby Rowan (Judy and Caleb’s grandson) that we’ve been praying for months. Here’s the latest update:
Rowan’s surgery went fine Friday morning, with the exception of some continued bleeding from the pic site throughout the day. It finally stopped that evening after they adjusted the pressure bandage several times. They changed the dressing Sunday though and it looks much better is doing fine now. He however, will not be going home just yet due to continued blood in the stool, some weight loss since starting the new formulas, testing they want to do regarding the bleeding, and to ensure that they are defeating the infections in his blood. He actually ended up with three different bacterial infections present at once, the third being a rare and hard to treat bug. The first choice of antibiotic they would have typically used they do not like to give patients with bone marrow issues and it has made him neutrapenic before. So, right now he is on his fourth iv antibiotic, getting three different ones a day still. They are looking for three consecutive clean blood cultures. I got a scare Saturday when they came to do an echocardiogram on his heart because apparently this 3rd bacteria has a strong incidence of colonizing in the heart and causing damage to the heart valves. Thank God, his was clear. He continues to be followed by his gastroenterologist, his hematologist and an infectious disease doctor while he is here. Hopefully he will be better and on his way home by the end of the week.
We go down for a nuclear bleeding scan in the morning to try to detect the source of the blood from his gi track and if they don’t get enough information they will have to go ahead and scope him tomorrow afternoon or Wednesday morning. Past that, daily labs and iv antibiotics are to continue. He is in good spirits most of the time, as always, and is flirting and charming all the staff here. His new favorite things to do here is reading books and having “picnics” with his play food and dishes. He pours tea and makes vegetable soup, and shares quite wellJ Oh yeah, and watching the activity outside from his window sill. Here are a few pics of the handsome little trooper from this stay.
So, just a few more bumps in the road but we will get there soon enough. We are prayerful and hopeful that there won’t always be this much hospital time or this much medical drama, and ever faithful and grateful for all of the love and support that surrounds us as well as the awesome demeanor God has given Rowan despite this all. It makes it all so much easier to take when he smiles each and every day.
